My LIVER CLEANSE experience..
Since I began studying Ayurveda, I have always been intrigued by Panchakarma - a pretty intensive cleansing treatment. This usually takes place over 21 days though you can find some clinics which offer this over a week or 10 days. The process involves internal oleation - by drinking oil - and external, by application of oil in various massage and other therapeutic techniques. You follow a strict dietary and herbal protocol so that your body is prepared sufficiently for detox via induced sweating, and purgation.
This is a fully supported medical treatment administered by qualified practitioners and Doctors and the idea is that this process helps us to remove accumulated toxins from the body so that we can purify this earthly vessel. By all accounts it can be an INTENSE experience but one that leaves you feeling reborn.
I have yet to have a full Panchakarma, though this year I have undertaken two different cleansing programmes. This post is about my first experience:
THE LIVER CLEANSE
Every year I always take between 3-5 days to reset my digestive system usually with a mono-diet of kitchari. This year I decided I wanted something a little more intensive and held by an Ayurveda Dr within an online community setting. This Liver cleanse involves much of the same techniques as a panchakarma though for a shorter period of time (1 week) and although supported by a professional via whatsapp, it was self administered at home.
Each day was directed by the Dr, and we followed a food, remedy and treatment plan. We drank various oils each morning which increased in volume each day. This was the internal oleation process. Food was vegetarian and light, and as we had more freedom to have different meals using certain ingredients, it was pretty easy.
On the last day we administered certain remedies with oil to initiate a downwards purge, essentially ridding ourselves of the accumulated oil from the week from our systems, as well as toxins and excess dosha. Though I as dreading this day, it was really manageable. I took myself off to my Mum’s house where I had privacy and spent the day resting, drinking lots of fluids, and waiting until the process was over.
I felt so light, energised and calm. It was a feeling of Sattva. Gentle contentment, like nothing was going to bother me. I had a sense of easefulness and a capacity to cope with the world again.
MY TAKEAWAYS
After this cleanse, I realised that I definitely need to review and lessen my meat consumption. It confirmed that I don't need caffeine. The methodical but simple routine for food and remedies kept me clear headed and motivated, and my energy, level throughout the day. Removing processed food e.g. supermarket sourdough, which I was having most mornings with eggs, when you eat this stuff again you can actually feel how nutritionally dead and heavy it is. No more. Bye bye.
If you are interested in joining the next Liver cleanse get in touch and I will send you the details.
If you would like to start with a shorter and perhaps gentler Reset- I offer 3 Day Resets throughout the year. You can either do this alone with my guidance at anytime in the year or as part of an online group each Spring and Autumn.
