Creativity: Vata energy in motion
Do you feel the creative pull right now? That sudden urge to make, bake, decorate, write or sing? Are little sparks of inspiration popping up in your day, or maybe even a few impulsive ideas that make you think, “Ooh, I could totally do that…”?
Not just me then.
I absolutely love this time of year because I feel most alive. There’s an energy about that lights something up in my belly. I’m so inspired it almost feels a bit unhinged — like there’s not enough time to do it all.
Last week, I had a rare day off with zero obligations. I woke up feeling this incredible creative urge — that almost hyperactive excitement that makes you want to do everything. Paint the front door. Clear the garden. Build bug hotels. Become a sculptor. Buy a sewing machine and learn to make clothes. Rip off the kitchen tiles. Redecorate the entire flat.
The list went on and on (and on).
And that, dear readers, is Vata in motion.
What Is Vata Energy?
In Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of mind-body balance, there are three doshas or energy types: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each one influences how we think, move and feel, and we all have a unique mix of them.
Vata is made up of air and space — light, fast and ever-changing. It’s the energy of movement, creativity, imagination and inspiration. When Vata is strong, we feel alive, full of ideas, and ready to explore new things.
But there’s a flip side. Obvs.
When Vata goes into overdrive, that same airy energy can turn into restlessness, anxiety or scattered focus. It’s that sensation of wanting to start a hundred projects but not finishing one. You feel like a whirlwind, beautifully inspired, but just a touch untethered.
So if you’ve been feeling that creative buzz lately, excited yet slightly chaotic — you’re not alone. It’s seasonal, it’s energetic, and it’s pure Vata energy at play.
The Gift of Vata Season
Vata energy isn’t something to fight, it’s something to play about with. It reminds us that we’re creators, dreamers and builders of beautiful things. We were designed to be makers, so go sketch, bake, write, play. Let that energy move through you.
Just remember to pause, breathe and come back to earth once in a while.
Your creativity will thank you for it.
